So, I engaged a Marine a few weeks ago in conversation. It went something like this:
Me: So, where are you from?
Him: Brooklyn.
Me: Cool. Did you go to church there?
Him: Yes. I grew up in the church.
Me. Oh, so you’re a Christian?!
Him: Yes.
Me: How long have you been on Island?
Him: About four months.
Me: Have you been to church yet?
Him: No.
Me: Have you looked?
Him: Not really. Not yet. Haven’t had time.
Me: When’s the last time you went to church?
Him: Four months ago, in Brooklyn with my fiancé.
Me: Congrats on the engagement! Lemme ask you this. Have you talked to your fiancé since then?
Him: Of course. Practically, every day.
Me: Spot on!. Also, if your fiancé was here on Island, would you try to see her very often?
Him: Oh yeah! Every day, if I could.
Me: Nice! So, hypothetical situation: Let’s say for the last four months, you never talked to or visited your fiancé. What kind of relationship would that be?
Him: Neglected. (That was the first word out of his mouth.)
Me: Compared to your relationship with your fiancé, how’s your relationship with God.
Him (with dawning clarity): I’ve been neglecting God.
Now, I can already hear some of you saying and thinking, “But I do pray,” and, “God is everywhere.” (Sigh) Stop looking for loopholes and excuses for not attending church! God has invited you into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ (1Cor 1:9). Why would any Christian reject this invitation from God?
Read: “You’re trying to be God!”
Stop neglecting God and His business! Jesus can be found in His Father’s house (Lu 2:49). Scripture warns us about neglecting and forgetting God.
- Ps 106:21 “They forgot God, their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt.”
- Isa 29:13 And so the Lord says, “These people say they are Mine. They honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. And their worship of Me is nothing but man-made rules learned by rote.”
- Jas 4:8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Lastly, I’ve discovered personally that the degree to which you seek God, is the degree to which He will reveal Himself to you. If you only want 5% of God, that’s all you’ll get. But, if you want all of Him, His revelation flows! Our God speaks! Seek Him with all of your heart!
- Jer 29:13 You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.
- Amo 5:4 For thus says the LORD to the house of Israel: “Seek me and live;
