“Why should I trust you with the power of My words?”

Proverbs 18:21 reads, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” (ESV)

So, apparently the Bible is telling us that words are powerful. We’ve all been on the receiving end of words that were inspiring and words that were destructive. And to be honest, we’ve also personally spoken words that were healthy and words that were damaging.

I recently showed a video of Dr. Masaru Emoto’s rice experiment. Dr. Emoto contends that our words are powerful, even to the point of literally and physically affecting things we speak to. In his experiment, he prepared three small beakers of cooked white rice. Everyday, for thirty days, he spoke positive things to Beaker A, negative things to Beaker B, and he totally ignored Beaker C. The results were astounding. (By the way, he repeated these experiments and the results were the same.)

To be honest… I was pretty skeptical about this, even as I was presenting it to the folks. So the only thing I could do was to conduct this experiment, personally. Unbeknownst to me, Ryan was also intrigued, so he pounced all over this challenge. He prepared four zip-locked bags of rice (two for him, and two for me). He labeled his “Love” and “Hate,” I labeled mine “Life” and “Death,” and we conducted our individual, simultaneous experiments.

Six days later as I was preparing for church, I remembered my bags. (I had actually forgotten they were on my dresser chest. I jumped up, found them, and was shocked! (See pics below) I immediately messaged Ryan, “Rice experiment???” He responded by sending me a pic of his bags. (Below) FYI: Ryan spoke over his bags daily. I spoke over my bags twice — the first day and about the fourth day.

I immediately remembered some Chemistry 101 – the basic makeup of atoms is molecules, neutrons, protons, and electrons. But, did you know that even to this day, science cannot tell us what electrons are made of? The best science can tell us is that electrons are energy, that they are vibrating and moving around the atom, and may be holding it together. Many scientists have also theorized that electrons are actually “sound.” This would give greater understanding to Hebrews 11:3 “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.” (KJV)

Honestly, I’m still a bit awestruck by this personal experiment, but I’m also convinced more than ever that I must be careful with my words because they are more powerful than I may realize. I recall my prayer time, years ago, where the Lord spoke a principle into my heart. “Nick, if you can’t be trusted with the power of your words, why should I trust you with the power of Mine?” (Yowsah!)

I’m certain that King David understood this as well, as he pleaded to the Lord, “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” (Ps 19:14 ESV)

Go, and speak life over all things! Saturate the world with His word!

Rice experiment1 - mine

My bags. I spoke over them twice in eight days. This was the result. I tossed them after 3 weeks, but the Life bag remained untainted, while the Death bag scared me because it became so nasty.

rice experiment2 - Ryan

Ryan’s experiment. He spoke daily over them for four weeks. The Love bag remained somewhat healthy. The Hate bag multiplied in spoilage.

In closing…

Saints, not trying to complain or worry much here, but we are in desperate need of your prayers. Presently we are being hard-pressed by so many crucial issues and challenges. Honestly, it feels like drowning and we’re in frantic need of air… relief. Of course, we’re crying out to God for deliverance… even repenting for our fear and lack of faith. But real talk, it’s still overwhelming, stressful, scary, and considerably distracting from the works we’ve been called to. Please be reassured that Sandy and I believe wholeheartedly that the Father has called us here. (So many years and so much Kingdom fruit!) Sandy and I have forsaken everything for His will.

Quick brief:

  1. Our authorization to be on island is at a crossroad. Throughout all these years, we’ve been able to maintain SOFA status (US agreement with a few helpful benefits). However, unbeknownst to me, policies had radically changed and I may have to convert to “Religious Visa” before the end of this month. This is much more expensive and complicated. We have so much to consider. Please pray that God would speak to our hearts, and that we would hear from Him clearly as to how to proceed.
  2. The building owner and PM are turning up the heat. They’ve given me six months to agree to a double-increase in rent or eviction. I’ve repeatedly told them that the property is not worth double and that I’m willing to negotiate. However, the PM covets my space as he can billet two-hundred US base protesters @$20 a head, so he’s pretty motivated to see me gone.
  3. We’re exploring to possibility of converting our nineteen years of volunteer support at Chapel into a US contracted position. It’s doable, but we need help and guidance from the right people, now.
  4. There’s a shift, of sorts, going on… like a breakthrough. So many new people have been showing up to these various ministries. These people require immediate discipleship, guidance, deliverance, and fathering. Please pray for mature, available believers to come and co-labor with us.

Finally, financial donations have been down. I hate to admit this, but I can’t help feeling like it’s my fault because of the lapse in newsletters. It seems like I’ve had to be so preoccupied addressing other challenges, fights, and demands that I’ve had to neglect getting updates out to y’all. (Please forgive me for thinking and feeling this. Just trying to process everything.)
